Upstate New York faced severe flooding on Friday as the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby brought torrential rain to the region. The heavy downpour led to flash flooding, particularly in southern Steuben County, prompting an active response from first responders.
Swift Water Rescues in Steuben County
The Bath Volunteer Fire Department’s Swift Water Rescue Team played a crucial role in the day’s rescue operations. The team was dispatched to various locations across the county, including the towns of Jasper and Canisteo, which were hit particularly hard by the flooding.
In Jasper, near the intersection of state Route 36 and county Route 21, the rescue team successfully saved an individual trapped in their flooded home. The person was safely evacuated and brought to safety, highlighting the team’s quick and effective response to the emergency.
Rescue in Canisteo
Another rescue operation took place in the Canisteo area, near county Route 119 and the county Route 14 intersection. Here, three people found themselves stranded on top of their submerged pickup truck as floodwaters surged around them. Fortunately, they managed to reach the bank along county Route 119, where the Bath Swift Water Rescue Team was able to pick them up and ensure their safe return to dry land.
John Conrad Sr., the Public Information Officer for the Bath Volunteer Fire Department, commended the team’s efforts, emphasizing the importance of their swift action in saving lives during such critical situations.
Widespread Impact and Ongoing Response
The severe flooding across Steuben County and other parts of upstate New York has underscored the dangers posed by flash floods, especially in areas where heavy rainfall can quickly overwhelm local waterways. First responders have been working tirelessly to manage the situation, ensuring the safety of residents and minimizing damage.
As the region continues to recover from the impact of Tropical Storm Debby, local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant, avoid flooded areas, and heed any evacuation orders. The successful rescues by the Bath Swift Water Rescue Team serve as a reminder of the bravery and dedication of first responders who put their lives on the line to protect their communities during natural disasters.
